1938
- September 17. Revolutionary War soldier Moses Broadwell
built Sangamon County's first brick home west of Broadwell's Tavern
on Route 125, approximately one mile east of
Pleasant Plains. The Clayville Tavern was part of the old Waubansie Indian Trail. It was built in 1834 by
his son John Broadwell, a soldier in the War of 1812.
The bricks of
both homes were made on the farm. Stage coaches routinely stopped
there and both Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas were frequent
visitors. Click the photo for a larger image.
