                                   About Us

Members of the Springfield Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Relief Society Springfield Chapter has joined efforts to keep our troops comfortable in extreme weather. The chapter project chair, Thelma Daywalt, rallied chapter members, church groups, and others, to knit 100% wool helmet liners and scarves and to sew neck coolers. We mailed 3,245 neck coolers in 2009 and 3,310 to date, in 2010. Pictured left are members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Relief Society.

Bonnie Long, pictured left, is being presented knitted helmets by Thelma Daywalt, prior to shipment to our troops in Afghanistan.  Bonnie Long of Knit Wits in Springfield, Illinois, designed the original knitted helmet pattern we are using.  Our project is in its second year. We've knitted 237 helmet liners, 128 scarves, and 33 caps and gaters (a knitted item that is for the neck.)

Annually in May, Springfield Chapter lays a wreath at the Lincoln Historic Site Receiving Vault, Oak Ridge Cemetery, Springfield, Illinois.  This was the first location of President Abraham Lincoln's remains.

In February we host a luncheon to present the DAR Good Citizens Awards to eight area high school students. A scholarship is presented to the chapter essay winner. Each year we present a flag folding ceremony, including the meaning of each fold, for the Good Citizens and their guests.

Springfield Chapter NSDAR gave its 48th Genealogical Seminar on July 20, 27, and August 5, 2009. Information distributed included samples of family sheets, pedigree charts, how to request forms for vital and civil records and how to use internet resources and genealogical libraries. Martha Bradley is pictured.

Cathedral Church of St. Paul To celebrate Constitution Week, the chapter rings the bell at the Cathedral Church of St. Paul every year on September 17, the first day of Constitution Week.  The bell is rung once for each year since the Constitution was signed September 17, 1757.

Springfield Chapter and three other DAR chapters host a reception following the Naturalization Ceremony at the Old State Capitol in Springfield. DAR provides a study book for the citizenship exam. We proudly present an American flag to each new citizen. Constitution Week is commemorated with a display of patriotic posters and materials in our schools.

Wauline Quick, chapter Registrar in 2005, conceived the idea for our Ticonderoga pin, which was designed by Carol Loper who was our chapter Historian at the time. Click on the pin for a larger image.
