Some of the Chapter Projects
Literacy Project – University of Victoria
Each year New Caledonia Chapter offers an
award in
the form of a book to an American Studies student at the University
of Victoria, BC, Canada. The recipient is recommended by a UV
department head and invited to a meeting.
General guidelines for
the selection are a hardbound, high quality keepsake book.
Chairman and Convener - Beverley Straub Watkins – Vice Regent
Books for DAR Schools – “Canadian Content Books for DAR Schools”
We collect Canadian-authored children’s books for our chapter's DAR School Project. The chapter’s mandate "Hands Across the
Border" is expressed through our book project. It is hoped our gift
of “Canadian Content Children’s Books” will promote an understanding
of cultural identities and diversity among young people. This
project creates a venue for good will and understanding between
citizens of Canada and the United States. In keeping with the NSDAR Literacy
Promotion Committee, we encourage literacy skills by providing
children with interesting, informative ,and educational Canadian
children’s books.
Chairman Lil Heselton – Registrar
Women’s Issues - Surrey Women’s Centre – “Hands to Hold ~ Gifts
of Comfort”
The chapter project
“Gifts of Comfort” reaches out to the local women’s community and
the Surrey Women’s Centre. We donate annually
“Comfort Bags” filled with useful personal care items. The pink flowered-cotton bags, handmade by a few of the members,
are both useful and appealing.
Chairman Lorraine Sharpe – Recording. Secretary
Chapter Family Bible Project
One of the ways to preserve history is to copy family Bible records
to send to the NSDAR Library
in Washington, DC.
Convener Edi Irwin
Tri Stake Genealogy Seminar
New Caledonia Chapter annually sponsors an information table at the
local LDS Genealogical Seminar. We always bring along the DAR
Patriot Index for folks to browse through. It usually draws
quite a lot of interest. Our chapter Registrar Lil Heselton has been
a seminar lecturer. Last year topics were: “US
Migration Patterns – How to Find Your Ancestors” and “Finding Your
Ancestors' Revolutionary War and Civil War papers.”
Chapter History Scrapbook
In 2005, former chapter vice regent Beverley Watkins arranged a scrapbook workshop
in Victoria and we began the task of creating a
history of the New Caledonia Chapter. The beauty of these 12 x 12”
scrapbooks is the acid and lignin-free decorated pages that are
slipped into clear top-folding protector sheets.
