General Sam Houston

General Sam Houston Marker. Located on the lawn of the Blount County Courthouse, Court Street, Maryville, TN. Dedicated in 1928 by Mary Blount Chapter. 

Text on marker: "General Sam Houston. Soldier and Statesman. Citizen of Blount County 1806-1818. Enlisted at Maryville in War 1812. Congressman from Tennessee 1823-1827. Governor of Tennessee 1827-1829. President of the Republic of Texas 1836-1838 and 1841-1844. U.S. Senator from Texas 1846-1859. Governor of Texas 1859-1861. 'I had rather all my sons should fill one honorable grave, than that one of them should turn his back on an enemy. Go, and remember, too, that while the door of my cottage is open to all brave men, it is always shut against cowards.' quote of his mother. Erected by Mary Blount Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution 1928."
