Mary Blount Chapter
|
|
Regent Charlotte Miller welcomes you! Mary Blount Chapter, Maryville, Blount County, Tennessee, was organized on April 21, 1921, with Mrs. Lorena Stone Norton as Organizing Regent. Our chapter sponsors the Elizabeth Paxton Houston Society, Children of the American Revolution (C.A.R.).
The chapter was named for Mary Grainger
Blount, wife of William Blount, Governor of the territory south of
the Ohio River, which later became Tennessee. The city of Maryville and the
county of Grainger were named for Mary Blount by her husband. Grainger is the only Tennessee
county named for a woman. Mary Blount died in 1802, and is buried beside her husband in the First Presbyterian Churchyard, State Street, Knoxville. |
