Real Daughters

The term "Real Daughter" applies to daughters of American Revolutionary Patriots who also became members of the Daughters of the American Revolution chapters. Dorothy Q Chapter placed official markers on June 14, 1924, on the grave sites of the chapter's two Real Daughters: Elvira Layton Mortimer Layne and Lucinda Hardee McMullen, located at Oak Hill Cemetery.

 Elvira Layton Mortimer Layne

Elvira Layton Mortimer was born in Kentucky on July 26, 1832, the daughter of Famous and Mary Blue Mortimer.  She married William Allen Layne on August 17, 1854, in Parke County, Indiana.  He was born April 26, 1825, in  Shelby County, Kentucky, and died in Montgomery County, Indiana, four days before Christmas in 1893. Mrs. Layne became a member of Dorothy Q chapter in 1905 and died August 24, 1907. The Laynes are buried in Old Hickory Cemetery in Brown Township, Montgomery County, Indiana.

Lucinda Hardee McMullen

Lucinda Hardee was born March 22, 1824, daughter of John Michael Joseph and Lucy Sears Hardee. Lucinda married Daniel Williams, who died March 19, 1892, and she married John McMullen in that year. He died slightly less than 6 years later. She died October 18, 1914, aged 90 years and 6 months. She and both husbands are buried in Oak Hill Cemetery, Crawfordsville, Indiana. She had no children. Dorothy Q Chapter dedicated an official bronze marker bearing the DAR Insignia at her gravesite at Oak Hill Cemetery, on June 14, 1924.
